These articles explain the background of Lithium-ion battery systems, key issues concerning the types of failure, and some guidance on how to identify the cause(s) of the failures. Failure can occur for a number of external reasons including physical damage and exposure to external heat, which can lead to thermal runaway.
The consequences of these mechanical failures on battery performance, lifetime and safety vary depending on the specific type of failure. However, the complex nature of mechanical degradation in batteries often involves interrelated processes, in which different failure mechanisms interact and evolve.
The causes of BESS failures can be attributed to a multitude of factors, including those from cell selection to system integration . The root causes involving battery cells include unsafe cell chemistry, cell manufacturing defects, poor cell balancing, and faults triggered by abuse conditions such as overcharge and external heating.
In the case of LIB, an undesirable temperature increase can occur within the battery as a result of electrical or mechanical abuse, or due to the presence of an external heating source. If the rate of heat generation exceeds the rate of heat dissipation into the environment, the temperature will continue rising.
Specifically, electrode cracking, delamination, particle and SEI fragmentation induced by battery deformation are the direct causes of performance deterioration. The severity of deformation correlates with the extent of capacity reduction and lifetime shortening .
Typically, Li-ion batteries have cell capacity degradation over time due to both cycling and calendaring aging . Non-energetic failures such as increased cell resistance, Li + ion loss, cell swelling, electrolyte leakage, and the consequent cell dry-out are the most common failure modes for batteries. Figure 3.
