This paper presents a battery testing methodology for integrated starter and generator applications in micro hybrid electric vehicles. Instead of requiring an actual vehicle and large dynamometers, a simulated battery current profile is used for test conduction.
The current waveforms of Fig. 6 show that batteries in ISG systems for actual vehicles are subject to a time-varying operation profile. Hence, the effectiveness of battery testing with relatively constant current profiles could be limited for testing batteries in ISG applications.
The actual testing of the battery is conducted by using the generated battery current profile as an input variable for the battery test equipment. The usage of the vehicle model, the drive cycle and the battery current profile enables a battery testing approach that does not require the actual vehicle and a high-capacity dynamometer set.
That is, battery testing that considers only a constant charge or discharge rate could fail to provide comprehensive details on batteries that are subject to operation profiles with large variances. The current waveforms of Fig. 6 show that batteries in ISG systems for actual vehicles are subject to a time-varying operation profile.
